השיר נכתב על ידי הגיטריסט פיט טאונסנד מלהקת The Who
למרות שהלהקה היתה להקת רוק פופולרית, פיט לא התנהג כמו כוכב רוק. הוא היה נשוי כמעט שנתיים, כשמעריצה ניסתה לפתות אותו לאחר ההופעה.
פיט הצליח לעמוד בפיתוי וחזר לחדר המלון שלו לבד. כשהגיע לחדר כתב את מילות השיר על כך שאף אחד לא יודע מה זה להיות הוא.
השיר שהתפתח גם על תחושות כעס, ועל הציפיות הגבוהות ממנו שמלחיצות אותו, יועד להיות שיר הנושא מתוך אופרת רוק נוספת (בדומה לאופרת הרוק Tommy שאותה כתב פיט) אך זה לא יצא לפועל.
בהמשך השנים, ועם שימוש של הרבה סמים ואלכוהול, הביישנות עברה לו והלהקה עברה לחיי הוללות שאפיינה את להקות הרוק של אותה תקופה.
למרות עיניו הכחולות, פיט היה מופרע לא קטן ונהג לנפץ גיטרות על הבמה. בהופעה אחת, לאחר שניפץ את הגיטרה החשמלית שלו, סולן הלהקה בעט במגברים ובציוד שעל הבמה, והמתופף פיצץ את מערכת התופים שלו באמצעות מטען נפץ שהניח בתוכם. מהפיצוץ העוצמתי, פיט שעמד קרוב לפיצוץ התחרש זמנית ושערו עלה באש.
