בשנת 1986, חברי להקת מטאליקה היו בסיבוב הופעות בשוודיה
כשהאוטובוס שלהם החליק על קרח והתהפך.
הבסיסט האהוב והגדול שלהם עף מהחלון, והאוטובוס נפל עליו.
הוא נהרג, ושאר חברי הלהקה שרדו עם פציעות קלות.
אחרי האסון הזה מטאליקה רצו לשנות קצת כיוון.
באותם שנים המטאל היה נקרא Glam Metal,
להקות עם שיער ארוך וסאונד מאד ממוסחר ומתקתק של להקות כמו Poison, Bon Jovi, Kiss.
מאטליקה עשו באותה תקופה משהו שונה לגמרי, הם הביאו לעולם את ה Thrash Metal
רוק כבד שמנוגן מהר, אבל ממש מהר.
אחרי ארבעה אלבומים כאלה הם רצו לעשות שינוי כיוון,
לעשות משהו טיפה שונה, מיוחד. כי כמה כבר אפשר לנגן בכזאת מהירות.
הם רצו להביא לאולפן את הסאונד שהיה להם בהופעות החיות. ואז הם הגיעו ל Bob Rock
שהיה בכלל מפיק רוק על הצד הפופי וביקשו ממנו להגיע לסאונד כבד יותר אבל איטי ועמוק .
את השיר Nothing Else Matters
כתב גיימס הטפילד כשיר געגועים לחברה שלו, כשהוא היה במסע הופעות.
השיר נכתב תוך כדי שיד אחת מחזיקה את הטלפון באוזן והיד השניה פורטת על מיתרים פתוחים.
הוחלט שעל השיר הזה הם יתחילו לעבוד עם המפיק החדש.
הם נכנסו לאולפן השינוי הורגש מיד, הם הכניסו לשיר המון שכבות של גיטרות עם סאונדים שונים ומגוונים,
ומתחת לכל השכבות של הגיטרות והסאונד הכבד של התופים, יש אפילו סימפוניה שלמה שמנגת בשיר.
הנסיון הזה של מטאליקה לשנות טיפה, לעדכן את הסאונד שלהם, לצאת מהטראש, מהמהירות והטכניקה
וללכת למקום של רגש, כובד, משקל ושל משמעות הצליח להם.
השיר החל להתנגן ללא הפסקה ברדיו, ובטלויזיה וחשף אותם לקהל חדש שהתמכר אליהם.
האלבום השחור שהופק על ידי Bob Rock ושבו נמצא השיר, נחשב לאלבום החשוב והמשמעותי ביותר וכזה שמבשר שינוי כיוון גם אצלם וגם במטאל וברוק הכבד בכלל.
