Space Oddity – David Bowie
בשנת 1957 ברית המועצות שיגרה את הלוויין הראשון לחלל – ספוטניק 1, וב 1962 מכריז JFK על ההצטרפות של ארה״ב למירוץ לירח.
ב 1968 יוצא סרט המדע הבדיוני הראשון אודיסאה בחלל 2001 המספר על אסטרונאוט שיוצא למשימה לכוכב צדק.
בחלל הוא יוצא מהחללית על מנת לתקן חלק תקול, וכשהוא מנסה לחזור אז המחשב של החללית לא מוכן להכניס אותו והוא נשאר אבוד בחלל.
באותן השנים, דיוויד בואי, בחור צעיר כותב הרבה שירים ומפרסם אותם, אבל לא ממש מצליח.
כמי שנמשך מילדות לחלל החיצון, הוא כותב בשנת 1969 את השיר הזה על אסטרונאוט בחלל ומשחרר גירסה ראשונה. אבל גם השיר הזה לא מצליח.
ואז הוא מחליט להקליט את השיר מחדש ולחבר אותו מבחינה מסחרית סביב היציאה לחלל של מעבורת אפולו 11 ומשחרר את הגירסה החדשה 5 ימים לפני ההמראה.
למזלו, המעבורת מצליחה לנחות על הירח, כל העולם בטירוף ובהתרגשות ובכל מהדורות החדשות כשמדברים על הנחיתה על הירח, השיר החדש של בואי מלווה את המשדרים.
צעד קטן לאדם, צעד גדול לאנושות, וגם לקריירה של בואי.
